Eligibility Check Based on Country of Issue
Spain allows the exchange of driving licences issued in the European Union, EEA countries, and a number of non-EU countries that have bilateral agreements with Spain. Eligibility depends on the country of issue, licence category, validity of the document, and compliance with Spanish legal requirements. Each case should be reviewed individually before starting the procedure.
- European Union / EEA — All European Union member states, as well as EEA countries, are generally recognised in Spain.
- Latin America — Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay.
- Europe (Non-EU) — Andorra, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom.
- Africa, Asia and Oceania — Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, New Zealand.
What Documents Are Required to Exchange My Driving Licence?
To begin the driving licence exchange procedure, clients usually only need to send the required documents in PDF format so the application can be prepared correctly and efficiently. In most cases, no personal attendance is required during the preparation stage, as the process can be managed remotely for your convenience. The exact list may vary depending on the country of issue and the type of licence.
- Passport
- NIE / TIE or EU registration certificate
- Proof of address in Spain
- Valid foreign driving licence
- Medical certificate (if required at the relevant stage)
- Passport photo
- Additional supporting documents depending on the country of issue
- Digital certificate (if required for online processing)
Once the documents are received, we review them, prepare the file, and guide you through the next steps until submission.
Will I Need to Take a Driving Test in Spain?
If your driving licence cannot be exchanged in Spain because your country of issue does not have a reciprocal agreement, you will normally need to obtain a Spanish driving licence through the standard procedure. This usually applies to licences issued in countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States, and other non-exchangeable jurisdictions.
In these cases, the application is submitted through the Provincial Traffic Headquarters (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico). Applicants are generally required to pass a medical and psychological fitness examination at an authorised drivers’ medical centre, as well as complete the Spanish driving test process.
Documents commonly required include:
- Official driving licence application form
- Recent passport photographs
- Valid Spanish residence permit
- Proof of address in Spain
- Declaration confirming legal right to drive
- Certificate from an authorised driving school, where applicable
The Spanish driving test normally consists of two parts:
- A theoretical multiple-choice examination
- A practical on-road driving test
We can also assist clients who need to follow the full licensing procedure in Spain and guide them through each step.
